What to Do With Old Office Furniture

Most office furniture leaving a building is not broken. It is surplus — which makes the disposal decision genuinely different from a household clear-out.

Office chairs, filing cabinets and equipment gathered in the middle of a vacated office

A team halves, a floor goes hybrid, a lease ends, a refresh lands. In every case the furniture leaving is frequently in perfectly serviceable condition, and there is a real difference between routing it well and skipping it.

The honest complication is that used office furniture has a weak resale market. Task chairs and generic desking are worth very little; recognisable brand-name systems in current ranges retain some value. Most of what leaves a building falls in the first category.

Your options, in the order worth trying

Sell it

Realistic for current-range branded systems in good condition. Not realistic for generic desking or well-used task chairs.

Offer it to the incoming tenant

Costs nothing to ask, and occasionally removes the problem entirely.

Donate to non-profits or schools

Genuine demand exists, but usually with conditions — condition, quantity and whether they can collect.

Offer it to staff

Surprisingly effective for chairs and small items during a hybrid-working change.

Reuse and refurbishment outlets

Some operators take volume for refurbishment. Availability varies and they are selective.

Recycle and dispose

The honest answer for most of it. Steel frames recycle; laminate and fabric do not.

What actually happens to it

An office chair is mostly steel, plastic and foam. The steel recycles well. A desk is a steel frame and a laminate top — again, the frame recycles and the top does not. Filing cabinets are almost entirely steel and are among the better items in a load.

So a realistic outcome for a typical office load is: a portion reused or donated where an outlet takes it, a substantial portion recycled as metal, and the remainder disposed of. Anyone quoting you a percentage without seeing the furniture is guessing.

Separate before the day, not during

Tell us which items are being retained, donated or sold and they are kept apart during loading. Unpicking a loaded truck is not practical.

FAQ

Questions on this

Will a charity collect office furniture?
Some will, with conditions on condition and quantity, and many cannot collect from an upper floor. Worth a call before assuming.
Is it worth selling used task chairs?
Rarely, unless they are a current premium model in good condition. The time cost usually exceeds the recovery.
Do filing cabinets need emptying?
Yes, please. A full four-drawer cabinet is genuinely dangerous to move, and it is also how confidential paper leaves a building by accident.
