How to Clear a House Before Moving
Most people fail at this not through laziness but through sequencing. They start in the most emotionally difficult room, run out of energy, and end up moving the lot.
Clearing a house is a decision-making exercise disguised as a physical one. The lifting is trivial compared with the cognitive load of judging several thousand individual objects, and decision fatigue is real — the quality of your choices genuinely degrades over a long session.
So the method matters more than the effort. What follows works because it front-loads the easy decisions and protects the hard ones for when you still have judgement left.
The order that works

1. Garage and shed
High volume, low emotional weight. Most of it is obviously going, which builds momentum cheaply.

If it has not been opened since the last move, the decision has already been made for you.

Duplicates, expired goods, appliances you have replaced. Fast and unambiguous.

Last, in a separate session, with time. Never at the end of a long day.
Three rules that make it faster
**Measure before you deliberate.** If a piece does not fit the new room, there is nothing to decide. Get the new floorplan dimensions before you start and a surprising share of furniture decisions make themselves.
**Do not create a "maybe" pile.** It becomes the largest pile in the house and every item in it has to be decided twice. Force a choice, or put it in a box with a date on it and deal with it after the move.
**Book the truck before you start.** A clear-out with a scheduled collection finishes. One without turns into piles in the garage that outlast the move.
When to split it over two visits
For a long-tenancy house — the fifteen and twenty-year Allen and east Plano homes — two visits is usually better than one. Garage and attic in the first, furniture and the rest closer to the move date.
