How far ahead should I book?

Two to three weeks before the move, and before the moving company does its estimate. That is the window where clearing actually changes what you pay.

What if I am not sure whether something is coming?

Measure the space it needs at the new address. If it does not fit, the decision is already made. If you genuinely cannot decide, it is usually cheaper to move it than to regret it — but be honest about how often that turns out to be true.

Will you take things worth donating?

Yes, and a pre-move clear-out is where most of the donatable material comes from. Usable furniture and household goods are separated for donation or resale where there is somewhere local to take them.

Is this cheaper than paying movers to take it?

Do it before the estimate, not after

Moving companies quote on what they see. If the spare room still contains a bedroom set you have privately decided against, that set is in the estimate — and it stays in the estimate whether or not it ends up on the van.

So the sequence that saves money is: clear first, then get quoted. Two or three weeks out is about right. Early enough that the decisions are unhurried, late enough that you actually know what is coming with you.
