How to Dispose of a Mattress in Plano

Mattresses are the hardest common household item to get rid of, and it is worth understanding why: almost every easy route is closed to them for hygiene reasons.

Start with the thing most guides will not say plainly: you almost certainly cannot donate a used mattress. Charities in the Plano area and nationally decline them on hygiene grounds, with very narrow exceptions. Anyone telling you otherwise is either misinformed or is going to dispose of it and let you believe otherwise.

That closes the option people reach for first, which is why mattresses end up leaning against garage walls and beside apartment compactors.

What is actually available

OptionThe honest position
Retailer haul-awayGenuinely good if you are buying a replacement — but you usually have to request it at point of sale, and it only covers the piece being replaced.
City bulk collectionOften accepted within limits and on the correct week. You get it to the kerb; it may sit there a few days.
Mattress recyclingExists, and recovers the steel, foam and timber inside. Availability and drop-off requirements vary.
Take it to a transfer stationWorks if you have a truck and a second person. A mattress will not travel on a car roof safely.
Book a pickupCollected from any floor, no wrapping needed, on a window you choose.
DonationAlmost never available for a used mattress. Assume no.

The apartment version of this problem

A large share of mattresses we collect in Plano come from apartment communities, and they arrive there the same way: a resident moves out, has no plan for it, and leaves it by the trash enclosure at nine at night.

Communities charge for that, and the charge is set as a deterrent rather than as cost recovery — so it is typically well above what a scheduled pickup would have cost, and it comes out of a deposit.

If you are moving out of an apartment near Legacy, along Parker Road or anywhere in Allen or Frisco, book the pickup before your final inspection. It is the cheaper end of a decision you are going to make anyway.

One mattress is a normal booking

It sits inside the minimum load. If anything else is going at the same time, adding it to the same visit is far better value than two bookings.

FAQ

Questions on this

Do I need to wrap or bag it?
No, not for a normal pickup. The one exception is a mattress with bed bugs, which must be sealed in a mattress bag before the crew arrives so it does not contaminate the truck or the next job. Tell us in advance.
Will you take the box spring and frame too?
Yes, all in one visit. Frames are dismantled on site where they will not clear a doorway assembled.
Is a mattress recycled?
Where a recycling route exists for the steel, foam and timber, that is the route used. What we will not do is claim it was donated, because used mattresses effectively never are.
